OED offers no less than two diverse senses for this phrase. That of female genitalia is attested as early as 1699, but it is not regarded as for that sense that means "coward". The opposite one, which I copy beneath, may be the purported source of pussyThe hymen is a thin membrane that, in most women, partly handles the opening towards the vagina.
